The hymn, “Great is They Faithfulness” is based on a passage from the center of the Book of Tears, Lamentations:
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (3:24).
On Friday, January 7, we began Floyd Olsen’s funeral service at IBC singing that wonderful hymn (his request). It was sung at Floyd and Peggy’s wedding 72 years ago and again at their renewal of vows for their 50th anniversary and again at their 70th Anniversary. And at his funeral service, we sang him Home.
We remembered a life of 99 years, just short of a century—the life a man who fought in North Africa in WW II, of a couple faithful to the local church who even helped plant a church, a man who modeled love of family, country, missions, prayer, and a man who was a sinner like the rest of us, but who blessed us because of his love of God.
Floyd though now in Christ’s presence will give his testimony today, “Great is they faithfulness, Oh God my Father…” He was faithful to God because God was faithful to him.
I preached from one of Floyd’s favorite verses, “You will make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). Yes, brother, our purpose in life is “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”
And I trust that we will all agree with his testimony just as we sung another hymn he chose, “O that will be glory for me… When by His grace I shall look on His face, that will be glory, be glory for me.”
