Robin Prayers

With our world, our country, and our community burdened by the Coronavirus pandemic, it is easy to forget that spring is here! Still, flowers are coming up and flowering trees are budding. On my morning walk today, as the newly risen sun blazed on the spectacular pink blossoms on a neighbor’s tree I thanked God for how His creation displays His glory.

Last week, Gerri told me that she had watched birds out her window for 20 minutes. Now she’s an active person; but she said that seeing the robins hopping and other birds flittering reminded her of God’s care for His creation and us.

Jesus put it this way: “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26)

I’m battling anxiety like many of you. I needed that reminder. And I need to be more deliberate in applying Philippians 4:5-7.  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Turning our worries into prayer requests is the formula for peace. So, let’s determine that every time we see a robin (or other bird for that matter), we will “cast our cares” on the One who cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

My friend Dr. Dan Anderson calls these “Robin Prayers.” God cares for the birds and asks, “Are you not of more value than they?” Yes! Look at the cross. He loved us and sent His Son to provide for our greatest need—forgiveness for all who trust in Him.

Enjoy spring. Enjoy the birds.  Be reminded of our Father’s care.
